Actress Sumina Ghimire is being featured in a hot role in her upcoming movie ‘Star’. The movie by Mahendra Budhathoki features actress suggestive item songs and suggestive dialogues.

Based on the trailer video (attached below) the movie is going to be one more addition to the long list of movies of adult theme in the recent time. It is to be noted that most of such movies have failed miserably to attract audience in theater. We hope ‘Star’ is different.

Kali and Damini release controversy in it’s peak

On the Fulpati day of Dashain two movies of Rekha Thapa are releasing. Such a release of ‘Kali’ and ‘Damini’ at the same time can divide the viewers causing loss of revenue to both of them.

It seems, the clash in release is started when Rekha choose Chhabi Raj Ojha to distribute the movie. Before that, distributor Manoj Rathi was supposed to release the movie. Manoj Rathi group lost the right when Chhabi Raj Ojha entered the scene. After that, Manoj Rathi group purchased the rights of Bhojpuri film ‘Damini’ to release on the same date.

It seems, Chhabi couldn’t take it anymore when ‘Damini’ replaced ‘Kali‘ in Bishowjyoti theater. Chhabi wrote a letter to the Film Development Board to intervene the issue and let the Nepali movie get a preferred treatment.

Manoj Rathi says that the movie was also shot in Nepali language along with Bhojpuri language, so it is not a foreign movie. In addition, the actors and crew members in the movie are Nepali so, he says, the issue of the movie being a foreign movie is baseless.

One of the most successful films of the current time, ‘Hostel’ makers have organized a success party in Kathmandu on the celebration of it’s 51 days in theater. According the the producer, Sunil Rawal, most of the film personalities, journalists and artists were invited to the party held at Siddhartha Party Palace in Banesowr.

At the time when most of the movies are not able to earn the cost, ‘Hostel’ has been able to be collect a good revenue.

‘Hostel’ features second generation actors in Nepali movie industry and is made on the story of college students.

"Maun" Suspense Nepali Movie 2013– Movie Review

Nepali movie ‘Maun’ was released all over the theatres in Nepal on September 27, 2013. The movie is jointly produced by Nabin Gauli and Suraj Bhusal, the director. Maun features Arpan Thapa and Namrata Shrestha in lead role. In addition to being the lead actor, Arpan has also written the story of the suspense love story of two deaf people.

Story:
‘Maun’ starts at a library where a couple buy a book titled ‘Maun’ written by an other named Barsha (Namrata Shrestha). The couple also meet writer in the café of library where, they reveal the story of Barsha. Barsha is a mute, deaf girl who had returned back to Nepal from United States and meets another deaf guy called Iman (Arpan Thapa) in a personality development workshop. As the time passed, Iman and Barsha fall in love.

When Barsha’s father returned from United States the twist and turns start to happen in their love story. I don’t want to ruin your movie watching experience by saying all about what happened to Iman and Barsha and how they face problems.

Strength and Weakness:
Before the release of Maun, the director had said that ‘Maun’ is a simple love story of two deaf people with suspense in the story. And as the director said ‘Maun’ is a simple suspense love story. Two deaf people and their chemistry are presented in sweet manner. The performance of the actors is another plus point of the movie. The background music of Rohit Shakya is good and it flows with the sign language of deaf people.

The songs of Sugam Pokharel and Sanup Poudel are melodious. As the lead actors are deaf, they interact in sign language and the audience left to understand them or read subtitle to understand the love chemistry between the actors. The communication of deaf people look nature and the flow of the movie doesn’t let the audience to feel bored.

Arpan Thapa‘s story and screenplay is appropriate and to the mark. The movie has a good scope for being better if the post interval part were tied in properly. The movie’s suspense and ending may not please all the viewers. Some of the out-of-sync scenes like, a rich and family girl trying to steal a simple dress might not feel appropriate. Story and the plot on post interval part of the movie could have been made better. Even if there are places it could be made better, the movie itself will not disappoint the audiance.

Star Cast:
Maun’s specialty is its star cast. Both the lead actors Arpan Thapa and Namrata Shrestha have done their roles very well. Both Arpan and Namrata have exceled in the new and difficult role. They have transformed themselves as deaf mute people and the conversation in sign language also feels natural.

As an actress, Namrata Shrestha looks beautiful, as always. Arpan Thapa’s facial expression and the way expressing emotions are appreciable. Another character Boke (a deaf character and a friend of Iman) has also done good job and makes you smile whenever he appears on the screen. Boke’s expressions are very funny to make you laugh.

Conclusion:
The movie ‘Maun’ is a simple and sweet love story of two deaf people. There isn’t any additional masala type of content. It is a big relief in the time when every movie feature contents copied from other movies and are full of sex scenes.

My recommendation – You should watch the movie !

Maun is a simple suspense love story – Suraj Bhusal

Nepali movie ‘Maun’ has released in theater today. Here is the summary of an interview with the director of the movie, Suraj Bhusal, conducted by our representative, Raunak Niraula, yesterday.

Tell us something about your movie ‘Maun’?

- ‘Maun’ is a suspense love story of two deaf people. ‘Maun’ explores the colorful life of deaf people and their love chemistry in the suspense story.

How was the concept of ‘Maun’ conceived?

- While I was working as an assistant director, our team had a feeling that a movie made on a love story has a good potential in Nepali market. A love story made one two deaf characters sounded very interesting and we started working on the story. To make it more interesting we added a little bit of suspense and that is how the script of ‘Maun’ was written by Arpan Thapa.

Although ‘Maun’ is your debut movie as a director, you are not new in the industry.  You had worked as an assistant director of Arpan Thapa in three of his movies and you have also worked with actress Namrata Shrestha before. How was your experience working with her?

- Working with Namrata Shrestha was one of the most memorable experiences. She is professional and supportive actress who worked hard from the start to the release date. On the of best thing about Namrata is that she devotes full time and support in one project at a time.

These days, most of the Nepali movies have failed miserably. In this scenario, what different you have done in ‘Maun’ to make it successful?

- ‘Maun’ has a simple and sweet love story with suspense in it. We love it and we believe the audience will not be disappointed when they watch it.

Tell us about your journey in film making. How did you became a director?

-  I used to get attracted towards movies since my childhood. Later, I went to India to study film making. I worked in few projects as an assistant director for some years before starting a movie on my own. ‘Maun’ is my first directorial movie.

As a new and young director, what do you think of a future in Nepali film industry ?

- There is very good scope as a director in the Nepali film industry. Everybody carves entertainment so, entertainment is an evergreen business. It all depends on if your ability to entertain people with good movies . All you need is hard work, being creative and it also needs a lot of patience to make a career in the Nepali film industry.

What types of difficulties did you face while making ‘Maun’?

- After working in a few movies as an assistant director, I had already made good friendship with the team. So, everyone helped me in every step of movie making. So, I didn’t face much difficulties during the making of this movie.

Do you have any other film making plans after ‘Maun’?

- I have a few scripts ready but I haven’t yet finalized on anything yet. We will decide on the next project after evaluating the response of ‘Maun’ in theater. I will let you know when something is finalized. For the time being, let’s wait for the response of ‘Maun’.

Do you have nay final words for the the viewers of Xnepali.

- ‘Maun’ is releasing tomorrow in 70 screens all over Nepal. The movie is an entertaining movie with simple suspense love story. We expect all of you to watch it and give a feed back. Thank you for supporting us during the pre-release of the movie. And, thanks to the Xnepali team.

Poster morphing in Nepali movies, a new free advertising?

It seems, Nepali film makers have decided that poster plagiarism is one of the marketing strategies. Although morphing of posters are criticized by almost everybody, remotely interested in Nepali movies, more and more movies are repeating the same thing.

The last movie we wrote about such poster copy was of ‘Wrong Way’, posted less than two weeks ago. Our readers, who otherwise wouldn’t know about the movie at least knew that the movie features Jiya KC and is being made.

We guess, the producers of ‘Producer’ knew about the free publicity and have released their own copy-paste poster. And, we fell for them and are posting their poster with the original (Shim Ant shared it in our Facebook page.) The photoshoped copy of the poster of an Alex Gibney’s film ‘Casino Jack and the United States of Money’ is made by adding a six Nepali faces in it.

Now onwards, we at xNepali will try to discourage such a trend in Nepali movies by not talking about the movies or their names.

We hope the film makers will realize that such unethical practice won’t help in film promotion.

Censor board responds to media pressure, Dhuwani awarded PG certificate (Watch Official Trailer HD)

After the pressure from the media, the Censor Board was forced to change it’s decision on censor certificate to the movie ‘Dhuwani’.  The censor board had objected to a dialogue in the movie citing the dialogue to create problem with the neighboring countries. Now, the Board has allowed the movie to be screened in theaters with PG certificate. The certificate allows children to watch the movie with adults.

After this incident, it is proved that the Board doesn’t have a clear guideline on censoring movies and they act on personal preferences and intuition. This is not the first time such incident had happened. The movie banned by the Board, ‘ATM‘ was released on July 26 without change after the court found it suitable for the public. With these problems, the Board doesn’t hold any credibility to censor movies.

‘Dhuwani’ is releasing on Bhadra 28 and is made on the story of human trafficking in Nepal. A NGO working on the human trafficking, Maiti Nepal, has purchase the rights in Nepal to use the movie in creating awareness of human trafficking in all over Nepal. The movie is directed by Pitambar Pandey and is produced by Kabita Shrestha. The movie features Kishor Khatiwada, Prabin Khatiwada, Dhirenraj Thapa, Anuja Gayak etc. in main roles.

Do Nepali Models fit in Model criteria ?

The British Association of Model Agents (AMA) says that female models should be around 34-24-34 in (86-61-86 cm) and at least 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m) tall.

Wikipedia defines a model as ‘a person who is employed for the purpose of displaying and promoting fashion clothing or other products and for advertising or promotional purposes or who poses for works of art.’

  • How many of them are posing for ‘works of art’? Probably, none.
  • How many of the internet models are ‘promoting fashion clothing’ or other product ? A very small number of them, I believe.

Some of you might say that the definition of model, in this digital age, is changed. I agree, and I also believe so. But, there is still something amiss, odd, or awkward on the way our modeling industry is shaping up. I have lost track of the beauty contests, being held every other day — and I won’t be writing about them anymore unless they are ‘big enough’ like Miss Nepal. These ‘model manufacturing’ contests might be one of the reason there are so many models around.

When you can’t fit it in the traditional definition, you should redefine term itself so that, everybody fits in it. Then, what is the definition of Nepali version of Model ?

Let me list out some of the points to be considered while drafting the definition of model. (I have only considered female models and male models are out of scope for this article):
  • In Nepal 5 ft 8 in is too much to expect from female models. 5 ft. tall might be an average height to be considered.
  • Usually models should bring their own dress, makeup kits, and make-up artist unless otherwise agreed beforehand. So, they are not promoting anything, except themselves.
  • Many models say that they have to pay the photographer or producers, not the other way around.
  • Only lucky models can show dress. All others should show the opposite.
  • Models should have a secondary job to pay for them. (When model agents, like cybersansar, can’t pay themselves enough and had to do alternative business, how can models expect to survive in that profession?)

Some modeling scandals and controversies might also be helpful while drafting the derination:
  • The modeling industry was shocked when models Ramita Bhandari and Sabu Shah were arrested on charges of trafficking girls promising lucrative jobs in Singapore.
  • Last year, when the Internet based prostitution racket run by Sangeeta Shrestha, was busted by the police, it was revealed that models were available for Rs. 50,000 per night. The rate of celebrities was twice that amount. Although, no names were revealed, it is clear some of them have opted to work in the business.
  • In an interview published in Saptahik, a model, Smita Thapa, told that she is earning more than 4-5 lakh a month. At the same time she told that she has lost track of how many people she has slept with. In response, another model Baby Thapa told that she also has a lot of boyfriends and is liberal in sexual relationship.
  • A model turned actress Namrata Shrestha sex scandal video showed her intimate moments with a married man — who wasn’t her boyfriend.
  • Another model turned actress Pooja Lama‘s similar scandal video forced her to marry the guy involved, temporarily. They got separated in less than a year.

Said that, I don’t mean modeling is full of such things. There are some positive aspects too:

Many have taken it as the stepping stone to debut their acting career. For example, Jharana Bajracharya, Namrata Shrestha, Nisha Adhikari, Richa Singh Thakuri, Kalpana Shahi, Anuska Dhakal, Sunita Gandarva, Rekha Thapa, Richa Ghimire, Puja Lama, Yamuna Upreti all started their career as models. Others have started their career as air hostess, fashion business, and dancing in Nepali and foreign restaurants.

Apart from moving on to another profession, some of the successful models — still modeling are, Nisha Adhikari, Namrata Shrestha, Binita Baral, Pooja Lama, Hema Shrestha, Kalpana Shrestha, Shristi Shrestha, Pragya Pokharel, Sahana Bajracharya, Sanju Pariyar, Aayushi Shah, Uma Thapa, Raj Ghimire. But, they also don’t fit into the definition of a model.

With all these information, I hope you would be able to come up with a definition of Model in Nepali context. Please use the Facebook comment box OR the one below it, to post your definition.
